Hundreds of thousands of people marched across France on October 24 to protest the rising cost of living and fuel prices, as well as deteriorating school conditions. The Interior Ministry reported 410,000 protesters nationwide, including 110,000 in Paris, while the CGT put the totals at nearly double those figures. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said nearly 1,000 people were arrested and police faced an extremely high level of violence; about 70,000 security personnel were deployed across the country. At least two people were seriously injured, while protesters and rights advocates voiced concerns about restrictions on the right to demonstrate.

Lula rallied supporters, including at a large gathering on Rio de Janeiro’s Copacabana beach, after 33 million people did not vote in the first round. Supporters of both candidates held rallies in Rio as polling stations opened across the country.
