The battle for Kordofan: The corridor linking Sudan’s east and west | Sudan war News | Al Jazeera

Fighting in Sudan’s Kordofan region has intensified since late 2025, making it a key battleground between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), now in its fourth year. The region, comprising North, West, and South Kordofan, sees the SAF pushing the RSF out of much of North Kordofan, while control in South Kordofan remains contested. The conflict is increasingly fought from the air, with drone strikes on towns and civilian infrastructure, accounting for a significant portion of attacks since the war began in April 2023.

The security situation has worsened, leading to movements towards Masango, Kigoma, and forested areas of Itombwe, with disruptions caused by illegal barriers, forced extortion, looting, and violence. Many residents, including women, children, youth, and the elderly, are without adequate shelter and face shortages of food and water, while schools and health facilities are closed or damaged, and agricultural activities are heavily impacted.
