IEC: 3.5 million voters cast ballots by 10am as eThekwini ballot theft probed

About 3.5 million South Africans had voted by 10am in the 2026 local government elections, the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) reported. Deputy Chief Electoral Officer for Electoral Operations Masego Sheburi said 98% of the country’s 23,996 voting stations opened at 7am and all were operational by 9am, although protests and bad weather caused some delays. Gauteng recorded the highest early turnout, with 895,000 voters. The IEC is investigating the theft of unused, unmarked ballots and the validation stamp from a polling station in Ward 2 of eThekwini.

RHDP-Adjamé: Fousseni Konaté Sentenced After Criticizing Adjamé Mayor’s Management

Fousseni Konaté, a business operator and RHDP activist in Adjamé, was sentenced to one year in prison on November 3, 2026, following a defamation complaint by Mayor Farikou Soumahoro. In early October, Konaté criticized the municipality’s management, alleging that plans for a police station and youth centers existed only in administrative documents, and denouncing spending on luxury vehicles and pressure against critics. Municipal councillors defended the mayor at a press conference; their spokesperson, Bamba Soumaïla, cited financial data showing an investment-spending execution rate of about 4%.

About 10% of South Africa’s exports to the United States in 2025 benefited from the programme. The Congress of South African Trade Unions estimates that 3,000 jobs could be affected, potentially rising to 10,000, and urges the authorities to work to keep the country in AGOA. The South African government has acknowledged the decision, which comes amid strained relations between Washington and Pretoria.
