ASUU threatens showdown with Wike over UniAbuja land

The University of Abuja branch of ASUU is threatening industrial action against Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike unless disputed university land allocated to private companies and individuals is returned. Branch chairman Dr Sylvanus Ugoh says the allocations defy an interlocutory injunction issued by the Maitama High Court on August 18, 2026, and urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene. The dispute dates to June 2025, when Wike announced plans to recover 7,000 hectares from roughly 11,000 hectares associated with the university, accusing it of occupying land without proper approval. ASUU says the federal government allocated 11,824 hectares to the university and that it has documents establishing its ownership.

Fighting has resumed in five provinces after the Houthis seized Yemen’s western Red Sea coast and the Bab al-Mandeb area in September.
