Kibua health zone in Walikale territory, North Kivu, recorded 114 cases of acute diarrheal illness strongly suspected to be cholera and 13 deaths between March and October 13, 2026. A report released by health-zone chief Dr. Yves Tshongo Bikunde describes two waves: 47 cases and 5 deaths from March to April, followed by 67 cases and 8 deaths from September. The health areas of Kilungu, Ntoto, Karambi and Kishanga accounted for 89 cases, though laboratory confirmation is not yet available. Kibua’s central health office is seeking urgent support for patient care, surveillance, specimen transport, clean water and sanitation, with insecurity, difficult access and logistical constraints hindering the response.

The new division will have a broader mandate than research and will not replace the NIH’s Office of Research on Women’s Health. Priorities include targeted research into diseases affecting women, such as endometriosis, and getting promising treatments to female patients sooner.
