Walikale: Calm on the Front Lines in Kisimba, but Risk of Renewed Fighting Remains High

Relative calm has prevailed for a week along the front lines in the Kisimba groupement of Walikale territory, North Kivu, with no significant changes in military positions. The Front for the Refoundation of the Nation (FRN) rebels remain in Malemo, Kalembe and Ihula, while the FARDC and Wazalendo hold several positions in Banamulema and Banakindi. The forces’ proximity and recurring clashes raise fears of renewed escalation. Civilians have fled their villages, some taking shelter in the bush and others in Pinga, where they face shortages of food, shelter and humanitarian assistance.
