Wanted by the United States, a close associate of Museveni's son will be extradited for arms trafficking

Michael Katungi Mpeirwe's extradition to the United States has been approved by Ugandan authorities following his arrest in Kampala on June 23, 2026. A former commissioner for Foreign Affairs of the Patriotic League of Uganda, he is accused of participating in an international conspiracy to arm the Jalisco New Generation Cartel. The extradition is based on the 1988 United Nations Convention against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs, limiting Katungi's defense options.
