Western Cape patients get custom 3D-printed spinal braces in just 48 hours
The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness’s Orthotic and Prosthetic Centre can now produce custom spinal braces in 48 hours, down from around two weeks. Introduced after a R5.5 million investment in equipment in April, the 3D scanning and printing service has already helped six patients. The braces are designed to be lighter and cost less than half as much as traditional plaster braces, and can support patients with conditions including scoliosis, spinal tuberculosis and compression fractures. Launched on 5 November, the service is available across the province by medical referral, except in the Eden District.
