Western Sahara: Mali Supports Morocco at the UN Despite Detente with Algeria

On September 24, Mali reaffirmed its support for Morocco's autonomy plan for Western Sahara at the UN, during the 81st General Assembly session in New York, following a meeting with Nasser Bourita. Bamako emphasized its support for the April 2026 decision and backed Security Council Resolution 2797 from 2025. Despite recent diplomatic normalization with Algeria in July 2026, Mali continues to endorse a solution under Moroccan sovereignty, contrasting with Algeria's support for the Polisario Front and Sahrawi independence.
