Western Sahara: Polisario rejects US proposal on MINURSO’s future

The Polisario Front threatens to leave the Western Sahara political process if the Security Council adopts the US proposal without major changes. It rejects a framework that would make Morocco’s autonomy plan under Moroccan sovereignty the sole basis for negotiations, saying this would restrict the Sahrawis’ choice. The movement also challenges the emphasis placed on Security Council Resolution 2797, adopted in 2025, and calls for talks to take all relevant UN resolutions into account. Established in 1991, MINURSO was tasked with monitoring the ceasefire and preparing a self-determination referendum, which has never taken place.
