Congo River waters: in Luanda, Tshisekedi demands a referendum before any transfer

At the opening of the 4th Luanda Biennale on October 22, Félix Tshisekedi said no water from the Congo River could be transferred beyond its basin without the Congolese people’s approval. In response to proposals to divert the water to other regions of Africa, he called for compliance with the DRC’s Constitution and laws, a referendum, and scientific guarantees to protect national interests and ecological balances. The forum, co-organized by Angola, the African Union and UNESCO, focused on water governance as a tool for preventing conflict. Tshisekedi advocated African cooperation grounded in each state’s sovereignty.
