Since May 1, the CDC has confirmed 1,645 domestically acquired cases of cyclosporiasis and is reviewing over 5,100 additional reports. The cyclospora parasite causes prolonged gastrointestinal symptoms, usually treated with antibiotics. Fresh vegetables, fruits and leaves eaten raw are the most common sources. The agency expects infections to continue rising through August.
