South Africa is facing a rise in xenophobia, with around 50 people killed in xenophobic incidents over the past three years. During the FIFA World Cup in June 2026, the national team, Bafana Bafana, became the target of animosity from African fans. Xenophobic riots, which began in 1994, continue to haunt the country, leaving a legacy of shame for Nelson Mandela's successors.
