When will we know the US midterm election results?

The first results of the US midterm elections are expected on Tuesday after the earliest polls on the East Coast close at 6pm (23:00 GMT). Vote counts will be released as ballots are processed, but early figures do not necessarily mean a winner has been declared; news organisations, including The Associated Press, analyse the counts before calling races. Closely contested races could take hours or even days to decide. All 435 House seats and 35 of the Senate’s 100 seats are at stake as Democrats seek to wrest control of one or both chambers from Donald Trump’s Republicans.

Onuigbo urged support for Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027 while cautioning that backing the administration should not mean overlooking its shortcomings.
