The World Health Organization (WHO) states it does not know the cause of the pneumonia that killed laboratory worker Darya Shipilova at a Russian research institute and that no plague cases have been registered. Tests on her and contacts were negative for the pathogens tested. She died on October 2, with no evidence of ongoing transmission or plague detection, despite initial suspicions of pneumonic plague and quarantine measures involving about 200 people.
