Work in Plantations: In Kenya, Gloves and Fabric to Save Coffee Farmers

In August 2026, the ILO's WIND methodology was introduced in the Meru and Nyeri counties to improve the safety of coffee farmers in Kenya, where over 800,000 smallholders grow coffee. A study revealed that 52.3% of farmers in Kirinyaga County show symptoms of pesticide poisoning, worsened by the lack of protective equipment. Coffee production is expected to increase by 12% for the 2026/27 season, while a new coffee law reinstates a supervisory council.
