Benin: As charcoal prices rise, government urges households to switch to gas

A bag of charcoal now sells for about 12,000 CFA francs in Benin’s markets, up from nearly 7,000. On October 16, 2026, government spokesperson Wilfried Léandre Houngbédji urged households to compare the cost and duration of charcoal use with domestic gas refills. Since May, 1.5 kg and 3 kg gas cylinders have been refillable for 1,000 and 2,000 CFA francs, while the 6 kg refill price fell from 4,700 to 4,500 francs. Houngbédji also promoted gas as a way to protect forests and combat climate change, warning that charcoal could eventually become difficult to find.

Presidency denies withholding ₦250bn in NLNG dividends from states

The Presidency rejected Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde’s claim that the Federal Government is withholding ₦250 billion in Nigeria LNG Limited dividends for each state until after the 2027 elections. Bayo Onanuga, the president’s special adviser on information and strategy, said the figure conflicts with historical payments: NLNG has paid about $21.5 billion in dividends to the Federation over 25 years, with less than $3 billion paid since Bola Tinubu took office. He said paying ₦250 billion to each of the 36 states would total ₦9 trillion and require more than ₦33.68 trillion in dividends from a single payout. Makinde made the allegation at a 2027 budget consultation at the University of Ibadan on Friday; the Presidency accused him of making misleading statements.

Peter Ameh, former chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council, accused the Tinubu administration of pushing almost the entire Nigerian middle class into hardship through poorly designed, anti-people policies. He was responding to a UN report that 17.9 million Nigerians fell into multidimensional poverty over three years—the largest increase recorded anywhere in the world. Ameh cited fuel subsidy removal without adequate relief, inflation, naira devaluation and the high cost of living as forces that have depleted savings and weakened small businesses. He urged the federal government to review its reforms, create jobs, stabilise prices and protect vulnerable households.
