‘Your son can’t win’: Wike urges kinsmen of Rivers NDC candidate to vote against him

Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike said Dumo Lulu-Briggs, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) governorship candidate in Rivers State, could not win the 2027 election. Speaking at a town hall meeting on Thursday in Abonnema, Akuku-Toru Local Government Area, he urged Lulu-Briggs’s kinsmen not to vote for him simply because he is from their community. Wike instead called on them to support APC candidate Kingsley Chinda, saying Chinda’s running mate, who is also their son, was certain to become deputy governor.

ANC admits disappointment after poor Cape Town election showing

The ANC in the Western Cape will have to reassess its election strategy after a disappointing result in the 2026 local government elections. Jerimia Thuynsma, the party’s proposed Cape Town mayoral candidate, said the ANC had expected to do better as provincial vote counting reached 80% around midday on Friday. He partly blamed the poor showing on low turnout among ANC supporters in the metro, describing their absence from polling stations as a vote of no confidence. The party plans to rebuild ties with communities and is considering monthly feedback meetings between ward councillors and residents.

DA draws coalition red line as Western Cape faces hung councils

The Democratic Alliance (DA) would rather sit in opposition than form a coalition with parties it believes have mismanaged municipalities. Grant Twigg, a DA provincial executive committee member and Cape Town mayoral committee member, said the party could work with parties or independent candidates whose priorities and values align with its own, but would not enter coalitions simply to gain power. Results supplied for the report suggest at least 16 Western Cape municipalities could lack an outright majority and require coalition negotiations. The DA is leading in many districts counted so far, followed by the ANC and the Patriotic Alliance.
