Youth Olympic Games: Refugee sprinters pursue their Olympic dream in Dakar

Florence Masumbe and Rachid Rochene, young sprinters originally from eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo who found refuge in Uganda, will represent the Refugee Olympic Team for the first time at the Dakar Youth Olympic Games. Training in Kampala, Rachid hopes to compete against the best, win a medal and perhaps set a record. Florence, 16, grew up in the Rwamwanja refugee settlement and sees athletics as a way to access better education and inspire other young refugees. Their journey has been supported by Game Connect, an Olympic Refuge Foundation programme that has used sport for six years to promote mental health and integration.
