Zambia, one of the few African countries with peaceful power transfers, faces a test of its democratic credibility in the general elections on 13 August 2026. The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has registered 26 presidential candidates (14 approved), including incumbent Hakainde Hichilema seeking a second term. Opposition fragmentation due to leadership wrangles and alleged executive interference weakens the chances of an opposition victory. About 8.7 million voters have registered, and an Afrobarometer survey shows 86% of Zambians believe elections are the best way to choose leaders.
