NATO: Trump says he wanted to test his allies’ willingness to help on Iran

At a rally in Wichita, Kansas, on October 19, 2026, Donald Trump said the United States had asked NATO allies for help concerning Iran, despite not needing it, to test their willingness to support Washington. He also cited the large sums the United States spends on the alliance. In March 2026, Germany, Spain and Italy had ruled out sending ships to help secure the Strait of Hormuz. The North Atlantic Treaty does not require allies to take part automatically in every U.S. military operation: Article 5 provides for collective assistance following an armed attack, while leaving each ally to choose the measures it considers necessary.

Bronkhorstspruit water crisis: 400 fall sick near Pretoria

At least 408 people, mostly children under four, fell ill between 7 and 18 October in about five Tshwane townships near Pretoria after drinking contaminated water. Tests found traces of E. coli, as well as norovirus, campylobacter and shigella; no deaths or cholera bacteria have been reported. Authorities have declared the water unfit for human consumption and told residents to use it only for flushing toilets, while water tankers deliver clean drinking water. Officials also advised residents to discard previously stored water and disinfect containers with household bleach.

According to a Financial Times column published on October 19, 2026, European leaders want to open their own channels for talks with Moscow rather than leave Washington in sole control of negotiations on Ukraine. They are concerned by Donald Trump’s rapprochement with Vladimir Putin, including their September phone call and reported US decisions in October concerning Russian diesel and Volodymyr Zelensky. Europe could offer Putin two scenarios: freeze the current front line in return for Ukraine never joining NATO, or have Kyiv cede the rest of Donbas to Russia while joining the alliance. These remain discussion options, not an agreed plan, and European leaders doubt Putin would accept either one.
