Zimbabwe: Vice-President’s Ex-Wife Released After Seven Years in Detention

Marry Mubaiwa, the former wife of Zimbabwe’s First Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga, has been released after seven years in pre-trial detention. Arrested in December 2019, she was accused of attempting to kill her former husband while he was receiving medical treatment in South Africa, and also faced fraud, illegal currency export and money-laundering charges. The Herald reported that the magistrate cited the psychological, physical and financial harm Mubaiwa had suffered during the proceedings. The release followed the prosecution’s request for a one-month trial postponement, while her lawyer condemned the delays in the case.
