Zimbabwe's Push to Extend the President's Rule Could Deepen Elite Divisions and Weaken Democracy

Zimbabwe's ruling party, Zanu-PF, aims to amend the constitution to extend presidential and parliamentary terms by two years, allowing 83-year-old President Emmerson Mnangagwa to remain in power until 2030. This change could also end Vice President Constantino Chiwenga's hopes of becoming president in 2028. Other proposals include electing the president by parliament members and expanding the senate to 90 members, consolidating executive power within Zanu-PF.
