NMA President Condemns Attacks on Doctors and Demands Safe Workplaces

Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) President Prof. Afekhide Ernest Omoti condemned threats, intimidation and assaults against healthcare workers and called for enforceable measures to protect them. In an address for Physicians’ Week 2026, he warned that poor working conditions, inadequate pay and insecurity were driving doctors away, adding that patriotism alone could not keep them in Nigeria. Omoti called for better staffing, adequate rest, regular medical examinations and confidential psychological support, and advocated integrating digital health, artificial intelligence and telemedicine without losing the human connection in care. Ondo State NMA Chairman Dr. Roland Bola Arohunmolase said the state had lost more than 400 doctors to migration and other forms of attrition in five years.
