2027: Police Threaten Crackdown on Those Destroying Opponents’ Campaign Posters

The Nigeria Police Force has threatened to arrest and prosecute people who destroy or deface opponents’ campaign posters and billboards ahead of the 2027 elections. Force spokesperson CSP Ani Iniedu said the acts constitute malicious damage and mischief under the Criminal Code Act and the Penal Code. Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu ordered commissioners in the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to take preventive measures, investigate complaints and bring offenders to justice. Police also warned that sponsors of thugs and others who assist the crimes could face consequences if investigations link them to the offenses.
