Onitsha Traders Petition IGP over Alleged Threats and Demolition

Traders with the Association of Modebeb Traders in Onitsha, Anambra State, have asked Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu to investigate alleged threats, intimidation and the demolition of buildings amid a dispute over market leadership and ownership. Their spokesperson, Chief Okey Muojekwu, said four buildings, including properties at numbers 77 and 79, were demolished in 2025 and alleged that property documents had been altered or forged. He also said suspected thugs stabbed him and called for protection for the traders. Association chairman Tochukwu Umeh linked the dispute to opposition over the Anambra State Government’s decision to remove some market leaders.

The report estimates the group had 600–700 operational fighters in February 2026 and says kidnappings provide labor, recruits, and families. It argues that Uganda’s military operation displaced the ADF but has not stopped gold from ADF-controlled areas flowing into Uganda.
