Modification of the Petroleum Code: How Ousmane Sonko Will Control Senegal's Oil

Members of the Pastef parliamentary group have proposed an amendment to law n°2019-03 of February 1, 2019, regarding the Petroleum Code, which is on the agenda for the third extraordinary session of the National Assembly. This proposal aims to require all oil contracts to be debated in a plenary session of the National Assembly before being approved by decree, in order to strengthen parliamentary control and ensure transparency in the allocation of oil rights. The deputies argue that the current power of allocation is overly concentrated in the hands of the executive, without involvement from the national representation.
