West Africa: Climate change behind intensification of rains and floods

Human-induced climate change intensified rainfall by 4 to 23% in West Africa, according to scientists. From June 20 to 22, 2026, extreme rains caused nearly 100 deaths: 34 in Ghana, 5 in Togo, and 59 in Côte d'Ivoire. Over 140 mm of rain fell in less than 24 hours in some cities, overwhelming drainage systems. Researchers conclude that such events, once rare, are now expected every two to four years due to human emissions.
