Kolwezi: More than 30,000 people evicted from Kamilombe mining site for joint venture

More than 30,000 people who depend on the Kamilombe mining site in Kolwezi were reportedly forced to leave from October 25 to make way for Kabulungu Kamilombe Mining, a joint venture between Gécamines and Falcon Ressources linked to an Emirati group. Local sources say the relocation took place without prior consultation and that the designated site, ZEA 371, lacks the infrastructure needed to receive those displaced. Donant Kambola, coordinator of the SOLORN coalition, raised concerns over the lack of a gradual departure period, flat-rate compensation of $400 to $1,200 per mining pit, and the absence of a complete resettlement plan. Those affected include artisanal miners, their families, and other people whose livelihoods depend on the site.
