Brazil judge bars law that could reduce Bolsonaro’s 27-year prison sentence

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes has barred the implementation of a law that could reduce former President Jair Bolsonaro's prison sentence for his involvement in a coup plot following his 2022 election loss. The law, passed by a conservative-majority Congress, aimed to apply to Bolsonaro and others convicted in the plot. Although President Lula vetoed the bill, Congress overrode the veto. Moraes's ruling suspends requests for sentence reductions until the court can review the law's constitutionality.
