EU watchdog urges smart glasses to clearly signal when recording

The European Data Protection Board (EDPB) has called for smart glasses to clearly signal when they are recording, so bystanders can understand when they are being filmed or photographed. These devices, which can look like regular glasses but also take photos, videos, make calls, and translate text, raise serious privacy concerns, especially in sensitive spaces like schools and hospitals. EDPB Chair Anu Talus emphasized that signals such as bright LED lights, audio cues, or notifications should be reliable, noticeable, and always up to date to protect privacy. Several European countries, including Norway, are considering bans or restrictions on the use of smart glasses in certain public areas due to privacy fears.
