Kylian Mbappé and LaLiga apologise to China over offensive remark

Kylian Mbappé apologised to the Chinese people after joking on the French programme The Bridge about a meme that placed his face on Mao Zedong. In a statement issued in French, Chinese and English by his company, Interconnected Ventures, he called his remarks poorly considered and expressed regret for the distress caused in China and among Chinese diaspora communities. LaLiga also apologised, stressing that the comments were personal, while its president, Javier Tebas, announced an educational protocol developed with clubs and players. China Media Group halted LaLiga match broadcasts and adverts featuring Mbappé, demanding formal apologies from Mbappé, Real Madrid and the league.
