DR Congo’s Ebola outbreak spreads to two new health zones, WHO says

The Ebola outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo strain has spread to two new health zones in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, according to the WHO. New cases were identified in Bulu, South Ubangi province, and Dungu, Haut-Uele province. As of September 23, the DRC reported 7,890 confirmed cases and 3,799 deaths, affecting seven provinces. WHO Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus stated that conflict and population displacement hinder health workers' efforts to reach affected communities and trace contacts, and that the lack of approved vaccines for this strain complicates the response.
