France: Gendarmerie faces a problem that could worsen as early as 2028

In a budget opinion on funding for the National Gendarmerie in 2027, lawmaker Anne-Laure Blin warns of a possible vehicle-fleet “obsolescence cliff” from 2028. Of its 33,600 light vehicles, 8,526 already exceed retirement criteria, and the fleet’s average age is 8.2 years, while about 3,750 vehicles need to be replaced annually. After 730 purchases in 2024, just 29 are planned for 2026, with no additional purchases announced for 2027; deliveries from previous orders are due to end in 2026. The fleet supports the Gendarmerie’s work across France, including public safety, crime-fighting, emergency response and judicial investigations.

He appealed to taxi operators to stop the killings, saying drivers and commuters were bearing the brunt of the dispute.

Altercation Between Captain Olive Diane and a Police Officer: Anne Féconde Noah’s Three Questions for Men

A filmed altercation at Douala International Airport over a parked vehicle involved gendarmerie Captain Olive Diane and a police officer, though the full circumstances remain unclear. Anne Féconde Noah, a communications representative for the PCRN, asks whether the officer would have refused to move his vehicle if the commander had been a man. She challenges prejudice about a woman’s appearance, age, and gender in a command role, stressing that state insignia should be respected. Noah advises the captain to use measures within her authority, such as having an improperly parked vehicle sealed, rather than give in to provocations.

LAUTECH ASUU Begins Indefinite Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) chapter at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, began an indefinite strike on Thursday, disrupting academic activities. The action followed the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum and concerns implementation of the 2025 FGN-ASUU agreement, arrears dating from January 2026, unpaid Earned Academic Allowances, and promotion arrears from 2013 to 2025. The union is also seeking changes to administrative committees and greater transparency in the university’s electronic voting system. In a statement signed by branch chairperson Prof. Olujimi Dada and secretary Dr. Soji Arinola, ASUU urged members to remain united and follow only directives issued by the branch chairperson.
