Hungary’s former PM Orban re-elected party leader despite election loss

Viktor Orban was re-elected as leader of the Fidesz party at the party congress with 729 out of 737 votes, despite his party's loss in the April election to the centre-right, pro-Western Tisza party. Orban declared he never gives up and took full responsibility for the defeat, while urging Fidesz to transform into a functional opposition party. During his tenure, he inspired right-wing conservatives across Europe and the US and fostered close ties with Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin. Since taking power in May, Prime Minister Peter Magyar has vowed to amend the constitution to reverse changes introduced under Orban.
