DRC: Around 50 soldiers tried, including for fleeing battles against the FRN in Masisi

Fifty-four soldiers from the FARDC’s 3415th Regiment have been appearing since October 26 before the Goma garrison military court, sitting in Walikale-centre. They face charges including cowardice in the face of the Front for the Refoundation of the Nation (FRN), murder, misuse of ammunition, abandoning their posts and disobeying orders. The army says they were arrested on October 20 in Ngora while leaving the front lines in the Humura area. Major Dieudonné Kasereka said the trial is also intended to reinforce discipline in the FARDC, with a verdict expected in about ten days.

Local customary and civil society sources blamed the explosive attacks on the Front for the Refoundation of the Nation (FRN) rebels, who reportedly targeted Wazalendo positions from Kibati and Kashebere; shells struck villages and a health facility serving displaced women and children. The wounded were taken to a local medical facility, and their condition remains worrying. The attacks came amid clashes between the Congolese army (FARDC), backed by Wazalendo, and the FRN, as the army seeks to retake areas of Walikale.
