Israel frees suspects in two settler attacks as West Bank pogroms intensify

A Jerusalem court ordered nine of the 10 settlers suspected of attacking a US journalist and European diplomats in the occupied West Bank released under house arrest. Israeli police said one suspect remained in custody and the investigation was continuing. Washington Post photojournalist Heidi Levine was hospitalized and underwent finger surgery after an assault while covering an olive harvest; French, Belgian and Polish diplomats and a French mayor were also attacked. Yesh Din research head Yonatan Kanonich criticized the swift release of most suspects, while UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres described the situation in the occupied Palestinian territory as “out of control.”
