US Arrests Nigerian Man Who Fled to Nigeria in 2019 Over Money Laundering

Adetunji Abudu, a 34-year-old Nigerian from Lagos, was arrested at Boston’s Logan Airport as he returned from Istanbul. He is accused of joining a conspiracy to launder millions of dollars obtained through scams targeting elderly Americans, including romance fraud and fake sweepstakes. Authorities say he fled to Nigeria in 2019 after an FBI search; five co-defendants have pleaded guilty and received sentences ranging from time served to 42 months in prison. Abudu appeared before a federal court in Rhode Island on October 21, 2026, and remains detained pending trial; the allegations have not been proven, and he is presumed innocent.
