PM sends Burnham and Labour warning over leadership contest

Sir Keir Starmer has warned Andy Burnham against launching an immediate leadership challenge if he becomes an MP, urging focus on the Greater Manchester mayoral election. Burnham is standing in Makerfield and would have to resign as mayor if elected, triggering a by-election. Starmer also indicated he would offer Burnham a cabinet job. Wes Streeting has said he is prepared to trigger a leadership contest as early as next week.
