Africa’s latest Ebola outbreak has surpassed 10,000 confirmed cases, most of them in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where 4,887 people have died. Since the virus was detected in May in Ituri province, Congolese authorities have recorded 10,060 infections and 2,684 recoveries, with the fatality rate near 50%. Cases have also been detected in Kenya, Nigeria and Uganda. The Bundibugyo strain causing the outbreak has no approved vaccine or treatment, complicating the response.
