Traffic resumes on RN27 after ten-day transport strike in Ituri

Traffic is gradually resuming on the RN27 in Ituri after transporters ended a ten-day strike on Friday, October 23. Dieumerci Uwilo, the Ituri transporters’ coordinator, said the provincial government guaranteed increased security, particularly between Lopa and Nyoka, where armed men operate; FARDC soldiers have been deployed in the affected areas. More than 600 passenger and freight vehicles have returned to the road, with the first convoys reaching Bunia. Transporters continue to complain of harassment at toll stations, while residents hope renewed supplies will lower fuel prices, which had risen to 4,500–5,000 Congolese francs per litre.

Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said nearly 1,000 people were arrested and police faced an extremely high level of violence; about 70,000 security personnel were deployed across the country. At least two people were seriously injured, while protesters and rights advocates voiced concerns about restrictions on the right to demonstrate.
