The BBC has canceled the planned Doctor Who Christmas special for 2026, which had been announced the previous year. The decision was made jointly with showrunner Russell T Davies and production company Bad Wolf. The last series aired in May 2025, starring Ncuti Gatwa, who left after two series, and ended with the Doctor's regeneration and the surprise return of Billie Piper (Rose Tyler). The BBC now plans to put the next series out to tender to secure the show's long-term future.
