Spain deports migrants from Ceuta in move criticised by rights group

Spain deported more than a dozen migrants from Ceuta after their asylum applications were rejected, with Morocco agreeing to receive them, according to Spain’s Interior Ministry. NGOs told Reuters that 16 people from African, Middle Eastern and Asian countries were deported. It was the first deportation of its kind since about 80,000 people crossed from Morocco into Ceuta over 48 hours in July, when at least 100 people died. Amnesty International warned that the deportees’ human rights could be at risk, as the crisis poses a political challenge for Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez ahead of the November 29 election.
