Moroccan intelligence uses surveillance to ‘silence’ journalists: Amnesty

Amnesty International has accused Morocco’s intelligence agency of using spyware, hidden microphones, and infected phones to unlawfully surveil journalists and human rights defenders. The report, based on a former DGST employee’s testimony, leaked documents, and investigations, states that Pegasus spyware and traditional methods like tailing and wiretapping have been used between 2017 and 2021. Personal data collected is used to smear activists, with devices infected at internet cafes and compromised at airports. Moroccan authorities deny using spyware against citizens.
