In the DRC, government launches the 2026–2027 academic year and maintains suspension of activities in Goma and Bukavu

Higher Education and University Minister Marie-Thérèse Sombo launched the 2026–2027 academic year on October 26 in the province of Kongo Central. She condemned violence in eastern DRC and said academic activities remain suspended at institutions in Goma and Bukavu to protect students and staff and safeguard the validity of academic records and diplomas. She urged receiving institutions to review the cases of affected students and staff promptly and facilitate their integration. Sombo also voiced support for university communities facing health difficulties in Kisangani, Bunia, and Beni.
