Bergs stuns Alcaraz in Shanghai as Zverev claims year’s top tennis ranking

Carlos Alcaraz, seven-time Grand Slam champion, was shockingly defeated 7-5, 7-6(4) by unseeded Belgian Zizou Bergs in the round of 32 at the Shanghai Masters, a result that also confirmed Alexander Zverev as the ATP’s year-end world number one. Returning from a wrist injury and after defending his Japan Open title, Alcaraz struggled to find his rhythm in a tough two-hour match. Bergs, 27, played a composed all-court game, breaking Alcaraz three times and expressing pride in his victory over one of the top players on the ATP Tour.
