USA: expulsions to third countries trigger human rights violations

Over twenty UN-mandated experts have condemned US expulsions to third countries, warning of increased human rights violations such as torture, mistreatment, forced disappearances, slavery, and human trafficking. Since Donald Trump took office in January 2025, the US has signed agreements with over 35 countries, including Burundi, Central African Republic, DRC, Libya, and South Sudan, to host migrants who cannot be legally returned to their home countries. At least 23,000 third-country nationals have already been expelled under these arrangements, according to a recent investigation.
