Spain, Morocco Move Closer to Building Strait of Gibraltar Tunnel

Spain and Morocco have signed a memorandum of understanding to conduct joint research on the seismicity and geodynamics of the Strait of Gibraltar. Spanish Transport Minister Óscar Puente and Moroccan counterpart Karim Zidane formalized the agreement on December 4, 2025. The planned tunnel will stretch approximately 65 kilometers, with 40 kilometers under Spanish territory, reaching a maximum depth of 475 meters. The Spanish government has also approved a funding of €1.73 million for technical studies related to the project.
