Ethiopia: At least 50,000 displaced people flee violence to Kenya

Nearly 50,000 Ethiopians have crossed into Kenya to escape clashes between the Oromia and Somali regions, according to local authorities and the UNHCR. In the Kenyan border town of Moyale, thousands are waiting to be registered at a primary school converted into a reception centre, while others are staying with relatives or in temporary sites. The violence began on October 20 after a Somali regional flag was raised in the Ethiopian town of Moyale, which is jointly administered by the two regions. The UNHCR is working with the Kenyan government, the Red Cross and other humanitarian organisations to assist those displaced, most of whom are women and children.

Care workers who meet visa conditions and earn at least £25,000, along with doctors, nurses, teachers and other qualifying public service workers, will retain a five-year route. The changes could affect many of the roughly 144,000 Kenyans living in the UK, although certain existing visa holders will receive transitional protections.
