Pope Leo resumes work in hospital while recovering from surgery

Pope Leo XIV has resumed work at Rome’s Gemelli hospital while recovering from the removal of a cancerous nodule from his right lung. He met Vatican chief of staff Archbishop Paolo Rudelli, and doctors said his postoperative tests were normal and his recovery was progressing as expected. The agency stressed that partners must respect national coordination, transparency and accountability mechanisms.

Their demands include promotions, placement on the base salary scale, risk allowances and arrears, a pay-scale adjustment promised since October 2023, and the creation of a hospital civil service. Hospitalized patients are already feeling the effects of the work stoppage as strikers await possible talks with the government.
